FAQs

  • Therapists are licensed professionals, or are working towards their license who have training in treating clients on their mental health symptoms. Therapists assess, diagnose, and treat their clients presenting needs.

Coaches work on specific goals of their clients and do not identify and treat mental health related symptoms.

This article from NPR provides the key differences between therapy versus coaching, https://www.npr.org/sections/shots-health-news/2024/09/09/nx-s1-5106771/coach-coaching-therapy-differences-mental-health

  • If you’ve never seen a therapist or other mental health professional, finding the right person may take a bit of research. To make the search more focused, consider:

    • Clarify your needs: Write down the reasons you’re seeking therapy now and any specific goals or concerns (for example: relationship issues, life transitions).

    • Credentials: Check that the therapist is licensed in your state or country and holds an appropriate credential (e.g., psychologist, licensed clinical social worker, licensed professional counselor).

    • Logistics: Check the therapist’s location and whether they offer in-person, and or telehealth. Think about travel time and scheduling options that fit your schedule.

    • Cost and insurance: Confirm the fee per session and whether the therapist accepts your insurance. If you’re using insurance, verify coverage and any requirements such as preauthorization or limits on sessions.

    • Consultation: Many therapists offer a free or low-cost initial consultation. Use that meeting to explain your needs and get a sense of fit.

Useful questions to ask during a first meeting or consultation may include:

    • Have you worked with people who have my specific concerns?

    • What is your therapeutic approach or orientation?

    • How do you typically structure sessions and length of treatment?
